After setting Agen JoniQQ apart during her marriage to Tubbs, Alice – now in her fifties – took up the game again, and once again earned steady income. By multiple accounts (including himself) he’s earned somewhere around $ 250,000 a lifetime on the table, though it’s not like we have the Old West version of Hendon Mob to confirm the figure.
Eventually Alice will open her own saloon-slash-brothel in South Dakota, called “Palace Poker.” There have been brief third marriages (again ending in the premature death of her husband), as well as various run-ins with the law. They resulted in occasional fines and jail time for Alice for various offenses related to her hosting a game visit JoniQQ, managing a brothel, and becoming involved in bootlegging during the 1920s Ban-era.
Speaking of, Alice enjoys drinking (her drunkenness sometimes leads to arrest) and smoking cigars, and references to this “masculine” behavior are often striking on her accounts. the photo on the right is perhaps her most familiar, taken in the seventies and immediately implies the stereotype of a woman posing as “masculine” -appearing an Old West gambler. Don’t deny other accounts of Alice’s beauty and love of “feminine” fashion, as she seems to be enjoying a trip to New York to spend her poker winnings on dresses during her younger years.
Indeed, if Wild Bill Hickok (who we will discuss next week) rates a spot in the Poker Hall of Fame, arguments can be made that “Poker Alice” deserves one, too. After all, unlike Hickok – about whom there are conflicting opinions about his poker skills – Alice is by most accounts the winning player.
